Our four-legged friends are curious creatures, and during the summer this can lead to some pretty serious mishaps. Snake bites are not only harmful but can be potentially fatal if they are not treated very quickly.
Symptoms of a Snake Bite
Your pet’s symptoms will differ depending on the species of snake, the amount of venom that has been injected, and the site of the wound. Dogs and cats are most often wounded on the face and limbs, but they can be bitten anywhere on the body.
Symptoms vary, and can include:
- Sudden weakness followed by collapse
- Shaking or twitching
- Vomiting and gastrointestinal upset
- Dilated pupils that do not respond to light
- Blood in the urine
- Paralysis
Tips to Prevent Snake Bites
- Always walk your dog on-leash, and stay away from long grasses, reeds, and waterfronts.
- Always supervise outdoor play, never leave your pet in your yard alone.
- Consider enrolling your dog in a snake avoidance training class.
- Maintain a short grass in your yard.
- Ensure that your fences and gates are snake-proof. Remember that snakes can climb!
- Keep your cat indoors, or in a snake-proof cat run.
Snake Bite First Aid
If you suspect that your pet has been bitten by a snake, immediately immobilise them. Keep them as calm and quiet as possible. Do not risk your own safety by trying to identify the snake.
It is vital to their survival that you take you them to the vet very quickly.
